According to British consultancy firm Merchant Research & Consulting Ltd., the balance of the global market for technical-grade carbon is characterized by current deficit, since consumption rates exceed capacity expansion. Global demand for technical-grade carbon is expected to grow by 3.6% a year to 10.8m mt in 2010.
Market research report ‘Technical-grade Carbon Market Overview’ indicates that China and India will feature the highest technical-grade carbon production growth rates, primarily driven by car industry. In the United States, the situation will be just the opposite as carmakers in America are plagued by overcapacity and are losing market share to Japanese and Korean companies, which drastically affects technical-grade carbon market.
Technical-grade carbon manufacturers will continue to shift production capacities from the regions with high labour and productions costs, such as America and Europe, to developing economies, like Brazil, China, Russia and Thailand, which go in trails of large buyers.
Technical-grade carbon is mainly used in the manufacture of rubber products which account for over 90% of the total demand for this feedstock. In 2005, tyre production absorbed 68% of consumed technical-grade carbon, while miscellaneous rubber products account for 24% of technical-grade carbon consumption. Technical-grade carbon is also applied in dying pigments, plastic additives, inks and paints.
The highest growth rate is demonstrated by the use of technical-grade carbon in the production of UV-resistant plastic products applied in copiers.
Other applications feature the use of technical-grade carbon in construction, consumer products, printing inks, paint and varnish materials, plastic film, pipes, cables, adhesives.
